Mountain Melodies: Youth Orchestra Welcomes New Members for Spring 2025

The Music in the Mountains Youth Orchestra (MIMYO) is set to commence its spring session on January 13th, 2025. This renowned youth orchestra, based in Sierra College, offers a unique opportunity for young musicians from grades 4 through high school. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, students can participate in two levels of orchestral play, catering to beginners and advanced players alike. The program aims to foster musical growth and teamwork, providing a platform for young talents to thrive.

MIMYO's conductor, Shannon Devir, emphasizes the transformative impact of music education on young lives. With a background in prestigious institutions and performances with various orchestras, Devir brings a wealth of experience to her role. Rehearsals are supported by a team of mentors specializing in different instruments, ensuring personalized attention and development. The program includes two annual performances and offers scholarships and family discounts to make it accessible to all.

Cultivating Musical Talent in Young Musicians

The Music in the Mountains Youth Orchestra provides an exceptional environment for nurturing young musical talent. Students engage in weekly rehearsals that run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., exploring both classical and contemporary pieces tailored to their skill levels. The program caters to a wide range of instrumentalists, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. By participating in ensemble settings and sectional groups, learners gain invaluable experience in collaborative music-making.

Under the direction of flutist and piccolo player Shannon Devir, participants benefit from her extensive background in music education and performance. Devir's passion for sharing the art of music shines through as she guides students through their musical journey. She has held teaching positions at several esteemed institutions and continues to inspire young musicians in Nevada County. Her leadership fosters an atmosphere where students can celebrate hard work and discover the joy of creating music together. The program's emphasis on personal growth and teamwork ensures that each participant reaches their full potential.

A Comprehensive Support System for Aspiring Musicians

The success of MIMYO lies in its comprehensive support system. Rehearsals are not only led by experienced professionals but also assisted by mentors specializing in various instruments. This collaborative approach ensures that students receive personalized attention, enhancing their learning experience. The program offers two sessions annually, culminating in performances that showcase the progress made by the young musicians.

To ensure accessibility, MIMYO provides scholarship opportunities and family discounts, making it possible for more students to join. Education programs manager Marge Shasberger highlights the high caliber of instruction offered, emphasizing the customized repertoire designed for each participant's level. String, woodwind, brass, and percussion students work on diverse pieces during weekly rehearsals. The program encourages exploration and mastery of ensemble playing, fostering a deep appreciation for music. Interested students can contact Shasberger for more information or visit the MIM website to learn about additional community programs and performances.
